THE WORLD’S LARGEST LAKES
- Asia-Europe: The Caspian Sea, which lies on the dividing line between Europe and Asia, is geographically definable as the largest lake on Earth; properly also definable as an enclosed sea, it is so called because of its origins, its considerable size and the fact that its waters are brackish.
- Europe: after the Caspian, which Europe shares with Asia, the largest European lake is Ladoga in northwestern Russia.
- Asia: After the Caspian, which Asia shares with Europe, the largest Asian lake is the Bajkal in Siberia, which is also the deepest in the world and the one containing the largest volume of fresh water.
- Africa: The largest African lake is Lake Victoria, which is also the second largest freshwater lake on Earth. It is one of the African Great Lakes.
- Antarctica: The largest Antarctic lake is Vostok, which is subglacial, extending below an ice sheet of about 4,000 meters. It is located in the eastern part of the continent.
- Oceania: The largest oceanian lake is Eyre, which is characterized by very considerable surface variations due to the irregularity of rainfall. It is located in Australia.
- America: the largest American lake is Lake Superior, which is also the largest freshwater lake on Earth. It is one of the American Great Lakes.
