The uses of ligatures are endless, from tie-downs to surgeon’s stitches. I knots are needed for mountaineering and climbing, caving, boating, and rescue of vehicles and people.
But also for camping and in crafts; such as weaving or chair stuffing.
Then there are nautaca knots; there are so many and each has a specific function: stopping, splicing, looping, winding, slip knots.
The node is also a unit of measurement for speed.
Equivalent to one nautical mile (1.852 kilometers per hour) sees its origin precisely in navigation sithout electronic instrumentation, speed was measured with knots to detect it.
Knots made on a rope whose leaded end was thrown into the water from the stern (the back of the boat) were counted.
Two sailors were needed: one keeping time with a 30-second hourglass, the other counting the knots that passed between his fingers as he dragged the rope across the seabed.
