An early definition of what would later develop into Italian regions occurred in the years immediately following the unification of Italy.
In the Kingdom of Italy, the highest administrative subdivision was the province, and regions did not exist as territorial entities.
Italy introduced regions on January 1, 1948.
In 1963 the Abruzzi and Molise region was spun off into the two regions, bringing the current number of regions to 20.
In addition, the special statute of the fifth autonomous region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, was approved in the same year.
