ORIGINS OF WINE?
In the Upper Valdarno, fossil remains of vine shoots (Vitis vinifera) dating back 2 million years have been found in lignite deposits.
Recent studies tend to associate the first tasters of such a drink as early as the Neolithic period.
It is thought that the discovery was accidental and due to natural fermentation occurring in containers where grapes were stored.
In 2010 at the underground complexes of Mount Kronio (Sciacca) and in the Sant’Ippolito excavation of Caltagirone remnants of the winemaking process were discovered inside a jar.
