Invented around 1760 by John Spilsbury a London cartographer and engraver, puzzles were originally geographically themed and were made by painting the subject on a wooden board and then cutting it out into small pieces.
As time went on, the subjects of the puzzles began to change: no longer just geographical elements, but also historical episodes and everyday life.
The materials used to make them also changed: while fine woods, such as mahogany and cedar, were initially used, the use of less valuable woods began.
Today the puzzles continue to be made but in cardboard, through a process of printing the image on anti-reflective paper, glued to cardboard then cut out, just as in the Autumn Feeling puzzle.
