Machines Before Machines – Bruno Munari

Machines Before Machines.

Over 40 cartoons published in Settebello in the late 1930s are collected in the book.

During that period Munari drew “humorous cartoons” for Bertoldo and Settebello.

To the comics he accompanies “puns and odd little stories,” drawing inspiration not only from Saul Steinberg with whom he collaborated but also from the American cartoonist Rube Goldberg.

In these experiments Munari plays with freedom, later systematizes the process, and taking up these prototypes, makes a book Munari’s Machines.

A must-have book in your library.

BRUNO MUNARI

Together with the spatial Lucio Fontana, Bruno Munari established himself on the Milanese scene of the 1950s-60s.

These were the years of the economic boom in which the figure of the artist-visual operator was born, who became a business consultant and actively contributed to Italy’s postwar industrial renaissance.

Munari’s publishing output spans seventy years, from 1929 to 1998, and includes books, advertising brochures for various industries, covers and illustrations.

In all of his works, a strong experimental impulse is present, pushing him to explore unusual and innovative forms starting with the layout.

From Unreadable Books without Text to his extensive output as an author in addition to numerous covers and illustrations for books by Rodari and Orengo.
