It is a gregarious species in every life stage, forming very dense and disciplined shoals of hundreds or thousands of individuals.
Sardines congregate in schools together with individuals of other species of similar size such as anchovies, and even juveniles of bluefin tuna and skipjack.
During the day it generally stays in deep water (25-55 m), moving to the surface at night (15-35 m).
The sardine feeds exclusively on plankton, especially zooplankton and especially crustaceans; it feeds during daylight hours, especially in the evening, but not at night.
