ESSENTIAL OIL QUALITY

The quality of an essential oil (as of any medicinal plant extract) depends on the quality of the plants used and the skill of the distiller. A partial yardstick, but one that can give us an initial indication, is the quality of the labeling. Complete and professional labeling should include:

• botanical name (and common name)
• possible chemotypic characterization
• part of the plant used
• place of collection
• method of extraction
• draw date
• expiration date
• Any operations performed on the crude oil (deterpenation, etc.).
• cautions (internal use, children, pregnancy, etc.).
